Le Vauclin, Martinique — since 2008

More than a place,
a home.

K-AREA is my workshop. A space for making, equipped over the years, open to artists and to projects — and, in time, it became the house of everything I undertake.

The workshop

The same place
since 2008

The floor, Le Vauclin

I am an artist. K-AREA is my workshop first: the place where I photograph, where I sculpt, where I scan, where I edit, where I get things wrong before I get them right.

I come from photography. Trained in art history and image-making, I learned the craft as an assistant, retoucher and digital operator alongside Robert Delpire, Sarah Moon and Humberto da Silveira, then through nearly twenty years of retouching for haute couture and magazines. My own work has stayed black and white, film and Polaroid.

This is not a service studio that opened up to creation. It is a space for making that equipped itself, year after year, as my own projects demanded. Film, digital capture, motion capture, scanning, real time: every tool arrived because a piece of work needed it. I make in order to understand — the ground comes before the theory.

What gets built here quickly outgrows one pair of hands. I invite artists, I take in projects, and those who come to work here find the tools and the time.

That is how the place became the house of what I run: ANISOTROPIE since 2018, CARIALITY Studio since 2021, and whatever comes next. They are hosted here, not owners. Before the structures, there is a person and a workshop.

Making and unmaking, building and undoing — in motion, without agitation.

The name

Kare, in Creole, is the square. Not a shape: a place. The one where people meet.

Kenya Area too — my daughter's name. The studio carries it until she takes it over.
